In recent days, Sanremo has found itself at the center of a heated debate surrounding a newly installed bell dedicated to unborn children. Each evening at 8 PM, this bell tolls from the tower of Villa Giovanna d’Arco, sparking controversy and impassioned responses from various community members. This situation has particularly drawn attention to Bishop Antonio Suetta of the Ventimiglia-Sanremo diocese, who now faces scrutiny over this decision.
The timing of the bell’s debut on December 28 is significant—this date marks the church’s remembrance of the biblical massacre of the innocents. According to a statement from the diocese, this observance is intended to resonate with the plight of unborn children today, especially as Europe increasingly advocates for safe abortion rights. The bell, conceived to give voice to those who have none, was cast during the “40 Days for Life” initiative in 2021-2022 and was blessed on February 5, 2022, at the San Siro Cathedral.
Responses from local leaders have been swift and critical.
Bishop Faces Backlash Over Bell’s Symbolism
Edoardo Verda, a councilor from the Democratic Party in Imperia, was one of the first to speak out against the bell. He expressed that this initiative does not foster understanding or care, but rather instills a sense of guilt. “This choice transforms pain into a symbol and that symbol into an accusation,” he remarked, emphasizing that it intrudes upon personal matters that should be about women’s autonomy rather than religious doctrine.
Maria Spinosi, a former mayoral candidate for the center-left party Ventimiglia Progressista, echoed his sentiments. She described the bell as a public and symbolic act that imposes a moral judgment against a woman’s right to choose, which is legally recognized by the state in Italy. “The bell of accusation resonates against a women’s right,” she stated, highlighting the moral implications of this action within the community.
Local Activists Speak Out Against Provocation
The group Progetto Comune, which represents leftist civic lists from Taggia and Sanremo, labeled the bell’s installation as a “grave provocation.” In their public declaration, they reminded the community of Law 194, a result of women’s struggles for their rights, representing a form of freedom in a secular country. They also referenced troubling statistics regarding clergy involvement in abuse cases involving minors, calling for the bishop to address these issues with the same fervor as he has for the bell.
They urged, “We hope Bishop Suetta will ring the bell for all victims of sexual abuse, especially minors, within the Church,” pointing out that according to the Vatican, the percentage of Catholic clergy implicated in such cases ranges from 1.5 to 4 percent.
A Call for Respect in a Pluralistic Society
Generazione Sanremo, a group that previously supported the current Deputy Mayor Fulvio Fellegara, also voiced their discontent. They clarified their position, stating, “We do not deny faith or the right to religious expression; however, we reaffirm the necessity of respecting all beliefs in a pluralistic society.”
Cristina Carelli, president of the Italian national network of anti-violence centers D.i.Re (Women in Network Against Violence), also weighed in on the discussion. She described the bell as a public shaming of women’s freedom to choose, likening this initiative to the violent reactions from men who resist women’s assertions of freedom. She asserted that the Church’s involvement serves to highlight the systemic nature of this issue.
As the conversations continue to unfold, the community remains divided over the implications of the bell and what it represents in terms of women’s rights and religious influence in public life.
