Sinner’s Coach Reveals: “He’s Not at His Peak Yet, But Maybe One Day…”

Update on :
Parla l'allenatore di Sinner: "Non รจ al massimo del suo potenziale. Forse un giorno..."

With the tennis season heating up, Jannik Sinner is gearing up to make his mark on the court once more. Fresh off an impressive streak of three consecutive Masters 1000 victories at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo, the rising star from San Candido is now setting his sights on a potential fourth triumph. Although his participation in the Madrid Open was initially uncertain, Sinner ultimately decided to compete, securing approval from his coaching team, including Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi.

In a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Vagnozzi shared insights into Sinner’s upcoming challenges and the motivations behind his decision to enter the tournament in Spain’s capital. He also opened up about his collaboration with Cahill and revealed some behind-the-scenes details that shed light on their dynamic.

The journey to Madrid was not just about the destination but also the preparation. Vagnozzi emphasized the importance of training, stating, โ€œWe had ample time to train at Indian Wells and are well-prepared. Jannik improved throughout Monte Carlo, and if we hadnโ€™t come to Madrid, too much time would have passed between that tournament and Rome.โ€

As for Sinner’s physical fitness, Vagnozzi reassured fans: โ€œHe is in good shape, and thereโ€™s no cause for concern. Thereโ€™s no better training than playing matches. A player who wins and performs well expends less energy. You can train for three months, but if you step onto the court for your first match without rhythm, youโ€™ll waste more energy than someone who is confident.โ€

Sinnerโ€™s management also revolves around his relationship with Darren Cahill, who may be parting ways with the Red Fox by the end of the season. Vagnozzi expressed hope that Cahill would stay, noting, โ€œItโ€™s not always easy to work in pairs, as everyone has their own role. Darren and I balance each other out. Iโ€™m the tough one, the one who has to say the hard truthsโ€”like the bad cop. Darren is more cheerful, the one who eases tensions.โ€

Reflecting on Sinner’s recent victory in Monte Carlo, Vagnozzi revealed what made it particularly special: โ€œIt was a combination of many small things: it was his first significant tournament on clay, and he had faced some misfortunes in the past. He always played well but hadnโ€™t been able to clinch the title.โ€

Notably, this win came against Carlos Alcaraz, marking a significant moment in Sinnerโ€™s career as he moved up in the rankings. โ€œWinning a final against Carlos in an important tournament feels different. You step onto the court and understand what you need to work on. The same goes for matches against Medvedev and Djokovicโ€”great champions always push you to find solutions.โ€ Alcarazโ€™s participation in the upcoming Roland Garros is uncertain due to a wrist injury.

At this point, Vagnozzi has not considered taking on another player, but he acknowledged the possibility of Sinner wanting to explore different coaching options in the future. โ€œJannik might eventually want a change, to not hear things from the same person all the time. I believe great coaches can achieve remarkable results with various players. Even before coaching Jannik, I envisioned what I could accomplish with him and saw incredible qualities. I wasnโ€™t wrong.โ€

Looking ahead, Sinnerโ€™s future appears bright, and there are still significant areas for improvement. Vagnozzi remarked, โ€œThereโ€™s no magic wand. It requires long-term vision. You need to think about what kind of player you want in two or three years and work towards that.โ€

He concluded with a reflection on their journey together: โ€œWe took risks from the start, addressing many aspects, which could have gone wrong. However, with patience, hard work, and consistency, weโ€™ve come this far. Sinner is still evolving as a player and has yet to reach his full potential.โ€
