TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- A motorcycle-riding suspect involved in series of killings and robbery incidents in Isabela died in a shootout with authorities, the Cagayan Valley regional police unit said on Friday, November 3.
Juan Baquiran, a resident of Alicia town in Isabela, was proclaimed dead on arrival at a hospital after an intense shootout with police in Santiago City on Thursday evening, November 2.
Joint operations of Santiago City police, Echague town police,and Intelligence Operatives of Isabela Police Provincial Office conducted a “hot pursuit” operation against Baquiran after receiving an information that Baquiran related how he allegedly executed his crimes.
Authorities received an information that the suspect was sighted riding a motorcycle with his “cohort” in Rufino Roque Village, Rizal, Santiago City on Thursday.
Police said they tried to flag down the motorcycle but Baquiran, the backrider at that time, opened fire to the arresting authorities.
The still unidentified driver of the motorcycle escaped but Baquiran was shot, which later resulted to his death.
Recovered in the crime scene were one caliber .45 pistol with chamber loaded; one magazine loaded with three live ammos; one fired cartridge case of caliber .45; three fired cartridge case of caliber 9mm; one color black galley backpack containing one serviceable hand grenade and one striped polo and one weaved hat.
Baquiran was the suspect of the killing Ildefonso Esteban Jr, a tricycle driver from Ramon town, and in shooting and robbery incidents in Echague town.
Regional police director Chief Superintendent Robert Quenery lauded the operating teams as he expressed his gratitude to the public for helping out the police in “giving fast and accurate information that would lead to the apprehension of suspects.”
“Now that we will be able to concentrate more on our anti-criminality campaign such as going after Motor Riding Suspects (MRS) particularly those involved in shooting incidents like gun for hire and robbery, I urge the public to help and cooperate with us so we can attain a safer place to live work and do business here in Region 2,” RD Quenery said.
