Cagayan MSMEs get P344 million sales off DOST’s SETUP

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Government-assisted micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)  in Cagayan have generated a P344 million in 2016, an official of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST).

DOST Provincial Director Engineer Sylvia Lacambra, in her interview at the Philippine Information Agency Region 02’s Tipon-Tipan on Tuesday, September 12, said Cagayan is second highest in sales generation of the agency’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). Isabela ranked first with an earning of P432 million.

Lacambra said the program was able to employ 1,578 people in Isabela, 495 in Quirino, 455 in Nueva Vizcaya, 361 people in Cagayan and 175 in Batanes.

It also aided 18 new business firms in Cagayan in 2016 and 2017, and now eyeing to get 24 new applicants for 2018.

DOST’s SETUP provides small business individual or group owners with upgraded equipment and machines to improve their operations and products.

Lacambra said that machines availed through SETUP will be paid with zero interest in a period of three years.

SETUP functions under the framework of technology acquisition, financing, training, and marketing, specifically DOST’s oneSTore hub which sells local products like ‘Chicharabao.’ Products can also be purchased online, Lacambra said.

The program prioritizes businesses on food processing, furniture, agriculture or aquaculture, handicrafts, and metal or engineering.

Lacambra said those who wish to avail the program must submit their Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Mayor’s Permits, and the financial statements for the past three years to show their capability to pay for the assistance.

She added that a team will conduct needs assessment and evaluate the firm’s waste disposal system.

The program also provides owners assistance in labeling and appropriate packaging of products.  Northernforum.net
