DOH RO2’s ‘Blood Olympics’ records 265/487 successful blood donations

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan-The Department of Health-Regional Office 2 on Friday, September 28, bared its recent accomplishments and updates during its 3rd quarter press conference.

The National Blood Service Program Coordinator of DOH RO2, Ms. Haidee Marion Sunico, shared the successful conduct of the celebration of the World Blood Donor Day and the National Blood Donation Month through the ‘Inter-Municipality Blood Olympics’ on July 11-12 in Ilagan City, Isabela, where successful donation of 265 was recorded from 487 volunteer donors.

Out of all the 37 municipalities of the province of Isabela, 23 participated in the said celebration.

“The theme of the celebration is about blood donation as an action of solidarity. It highlights the human values of altruism, respect, empathy and kindness,” Sunico shared to the media during the presscon.

She also revealed that the province of Isabela was ‘strategically chosen’ for this year’s celebration because, unlike the other provinces in Cagayan Valley, it is the only remaining province that is yet to issue an ordinance mandating the blood donation of the 1% of the total population of each municipality.

Breastfeeding campaign

During the same presscon, the agency also emphasized once again its long-standing advocacy of breastfeeding and its importance as a ‘foundation for a healthy life’ for every baby.

When asked about their opinion on mothers who do breastfeeding in public, Ms. Nerissa Mabbayad, Nutritionist Dietician IV, said that there is no problem with such, and that breastfeeding should be ‘put back to normal’.

Tuberculosis detection

For 2018, the regional office raised its target number of cases of Tubercolosis to be detected to 20,000, which was preceded by the decision of DOH, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), to increase the incidence detection rate to 554 per 100,000 population.

As of the second quarter of the year, there have been 5,454 cases of Tubercolosis detected, which is said by Ms. Mannilyn Allavun, Tubercolosis Program Coordinator, to be still far from the target number.

Regional Director Rio Magpantay also reiterated the need for the agency, in partnership with the media, to make everyone aware that Tubercolosis can be treated, given that there are still many cases that remain to be undetected.

Generic medicines

The agency made more apparent during the presscon it’s goal to inform the people on generic drugs, to make them aware of their right to choose their medicines in accordance to their budget, and to mandate all government physicians to observe ‘generics-only prescribing’.

Now that the Generics Act of 1988 is in its 30th year of implementation, Ms. Ronalyn Rodriquez from the pharmaceutical division of the regional agency suggested an amendment for the law to include private physicians to likewise observe the mandated ‘generics-only prescribing’.
