The world of sports often intertwines with personal stories that reveal the emotional depths behind the athletes we admire. One such tale unfolds in the recently released book, In a Time Only Ours, penned by the celebrated swimmer Federica Pellegrini and her partner Matteo Giunta. This collaborative work delves into their shared journey, exploring not only their love but also the myriad challenges they faced along the way. Their candid reflections, shared in a revealing interview, offer insights into their relationship that fans have rarely seen before.
Pellegrini, a figure of resilience and determination, shares anecdotes that illuminate her unique approach to winning Giunta’s heart. "I come from a family where my father was a bartender, and I knew my background was a bit more stable than his," she jokes, revealing her playful strategy for wooing him. Giunta, on the other hand, adds a humorous twist, recalling the lengths he went to keep their romance under wraps: "I often found myself hiding in the trunk of the car. Thankfully, it was spacious, but being 1.94 meters tall, I ended up with sciatica."
Despite the lighthearted moments, their path was not without obstacles. Pellegrini, known as La Divina, faced significant sacrifices to maintain her elite status in swimming. After the Athens Olympics at just sixteen, she left her family behind to train in Milan with other athletes. The loneliness was palpable, and the pressure of fame became a heavy burden to bear.
Pellegrini candidly describes the toll it took on her mental health: "Everything I did was scrutinized. I was living in a swimsuit, grappling with hormonal fluctuations that everyone seemed to notice. I developed bulimia, but fortunately, being introspective helped me realize that I needed to change my path." Her journey of recovery began as she acknowledged the damage her actions were causing to her career.
The 2016 Olympics in Rio brought its own set of challenges. Finishing in fourth place was a pivotal moment for Pellegrini. She reflects, "If I had won bronze, I might have retired then, missing out on future world championships and my fifth Olympic final. That pain was something I never wanted to feel again. A month later, I was back in the pool, determined to swim stronger than ever."
On January 3, 2024, Pellegrini welcomed her daughter Matilde into the world, navigating the physical and emotional changes that come with motherhood. "At first, people looked at me and thought, ‘Wow, she looks heavy!’ Before they realized it was just the pregnancy," she shares. The experience of her pregnancy became one of her most cherished memories.
However, motherhood also presented its struggles. After what she described as a "challenging" birth, she faced the onset of the "baby blues." "I believe it all started with that complicated delivery. When I first held my baby, I was already exhausted. The first two months were incredibly tough," she admits, revealing that she is not considering having another child anytime soon.
Her emotional journey continued as she navigated the complexities of postpartum feelings. "The first night in the hospital, I found myself crying while looking at my mother. I didn’t even know why," she recalls. This emotional upheaval persisted, with unexpected tears appearing at the same time each night. Fortunately, her experience did not escalate into postpartum depression. "Managing these emotions was challenging, but I was grateful to not experience the rejection of my daughter. In fact, breastfeeding brought me comfort, despite the added exhaustion."
Through their book and the stories shared, Pellegrini and Giunta provide a glimpse into the realities of love, ambition, and the human experience behind the athlete’s facade. Their journey is a testament to the strength of their bond and the resilience required to navigate both personal and professional challenges.
