The possibility of an Elden Ring movie might not be as far-fetched as it seems, especially after the latest comments from George R.R. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones series. Known for his deep and intricate world-building, Martin’s involvement in this potential adaptation could bring something special to the table.
Talks of a potential movie
The idea of adapting Elden Ring, the critically acclaimed action RPG from FromSoftware, into a film has been circulating for a while. It gained fresh momentum recently when Martin himself spoke about it during an interview with IGN at the IGN Fan Fest. While he was careful not to dive into specifics, he did confirm that discussions were underway. “I can’t really talk about the project, but there are talks of making an Elden Ring movie,” he shared. This statement echoes previous remarks from Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware and creator of the Souls series, who had hinted at the possibility of such an adaptation last year.

Persistent challenges
While the idea is exciting, the path to a successful Elden Ring film isn’t entirely clear just yet. Miyazaki has previously discussed the challenges of branching out into a different medium. In a candid interview last July, he acknowledged the need for a skilled collaborator to make a film adaptation feasible. “I don’t think we at From Software have the knowledge or the capability to produce something in another medium. That’s where a strong partner would come in,” he explained. Miyazaki also mentioned the importance of trust and alignment in what they want to achieve, indicating that while interest in the project is strong, they’re still looking for the right fit.
At this stage, no production partners have been confirmed, but Martin’s involvement seems like a natural fit, given his background in both fantasy storytelling and involvement in TV adaptations of his own work. That said, he too faces some hurdles, particularly with his ongoing work on the sixth book of the Game of Thrones saga. In a rather relatable admission, Martin noted, “We’ll see if there’s an Elden Ring movie and what my role might be, because I don’t know. I’m a few years behind on my book, so that limits how much I can take on.” This reveals the significant time investment required for such a major project, which means fans might need to wait a little longer before any real movement happens.
In the meantime, it’s clear that both FromSoftware and Martin are taking the idea seriously, even if the project remains in the early stages. For now, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope that this potential collaboration will eventually come to fruition—though it’s safe to say, it will take time before we see a final product.
