PNP Region 02: Barangay, SK elections 2018 ‘generally peaceful’

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Save for some reports of alleged vote-buying, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Election (BSKE) 2018 in Region 02 was generally peaceful, according to Cagayan Valley Police.

Police Regional Office 02 (PRO2) noted “simple commotions” among candidates and supporters, and overcrowded polling centers during election day on Monday, May 14.

PRO2 also received “typical” incidents and problems encountered by several voters.

Cagayan Valley Police Director Chief Superintendent Jose Mario Espino attributed the peaceful conduct of elections to the early security preparations imposed by the Regional Joint Security Control Center (RJSCC) composed of the police, army, and the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Espino added that PRO2’s massive information drive for a safe and secure BSKE 2018 also resulted to the peaceful election.

A week before the elections, Espino and the military’s 5th Infantry Division Commander Major General Perfecto Rimando Jr ordered deployment of “enough number” of police officers and soldiers to provide security to designated polling areas in different barangays in the region.

On Monday, over 3,000 police officers were deployed throughout the region, especially in election hot spots.

Police Chief Superintendent Edgardo Pamittan, the Executive Officer of PNP Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Northern Luzon on Barangay and SK Elections conducted field inspection and accounting of police personnel.

Meanwhile, police recorded no violations of the election gun ban during the election day, but recorded violations on the ban days prior. (READ: Cagayan Valley police confiscate 19 guns, nab 17 during Comelec gun ban)

Police will still strictly implement the election gun ban until Comelec declares its lifting, Espino said.

PRO2 also received reports of three-election related incidents including the murder of a barangay chairman in Isabela, days before election.

Further, Espino has urged citizens to report cases of vote buying that transpired during the election. Northernforum.net
