SM donates another 2-storey, 4-classroom building to Carig school

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- SM Prime through SM Foundation donated another two-storey, four classroom school building to Carig Elementary School (CES) on Thursday, June 07.

The building is SM’s 88th donated school building and the second one to be turned over to this city. The project was also made possible through SM’s partnership with UBS Investments Philippines, Inc.

“The [first] turnover was last year after the devastation of Typhoon Lawin and we never expected that another building will be given to us. We are greatly honored and blessed,” CES Principal Emely Tango said.

Aside from the new building, SM Prime gave the school 200 fully furnished armchairs with 20 left-handed armchairs, four sets of teacher’s table and chair, four wall clocks, four toilets, eight blackboards, and 16 wall fans.

SM proudly said the armchairs were made by persons with disabilities (PWDs) who are beneficiaries of SM Foundation.

The foundation emphasized that SM not only donates but they also boost PWD’s self-pride and self- esteem.

“Tuwang-tuwa kaming nakabalik dito. I love Tuguegarao. Tuguegarao is actually the Center of Prayer for the whole Philippines. You know why? Dininig ang inyong mga panalangin. Dalawang school agad ang naipatayo,” said Juris Soliman, head of SM’s School Building Program.

Father Dante Sabban led the blessing of the school building while Tuguegarao City Mayor Jefferson Soriano and Vice Mayor Ben-ben De Guzman II joined the ribbon cutting during the turnover ceremony.

“I am grateful to SM Foundation for their love for Tuguegarao especially Carig Elementary School. The city government cares for the academe so much and I will make the building as benchmark for other school buildings to be constructed in the city. I promise I that I will put tiles on the donated building,” Soriano said.

The school, then-known as Carig Primary School, opened in 1950 with one classroom building made up of cogon grass and bamboo. There were only 12 pupils from two-grade levels with one teacher at that time.

The school’s oldest building is more than 60 years old. Grade 1 and Grade 5 students occupy the building.

CES is one of the Best schools in the division as far as National Achievement Test performance is concerned. CES has produced winners in DepEd competitions such in division, regional, and national categories.

“Naniniwala kami na ang mga school building na ito ay para sa mga bata at ito ay nararapat para sa kanila. May the family of Carig Elementary School take good care of these classrooms as how SM family love and care these school building,” saidKristine Iris Ceballos, SM Tuguegarao Downtown’s Assistant Mall Manager.

SM, being the only company to do such endeavor, through its school building program has donated over 280 classrooms nationwide since its launch in 2002. Gerina Rose Malubay/PR/SMCTD/GTL
