Tuguegarao beats Cagayan in 4-1 shootout, advances in football finals

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- After three years, Tuguegarao City Football Boys Secondary Team finally secured a chance to compete in the category’s championship game of Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association meet 2018.

Tuguegarao City beat Cagayan in a shootout, 4-1, following a tied 1-1 score in playing time, to earn a spot against Nueva Vizcaya and the cheers of their hometown crowd in Cagayan Sports Complex on Wednesday, February 28.

Team Cagayan had an early advantage by gaining the first goal in the semi-final game, yet Tuguegarao caught up in the second half, leading to the penalty shootout.

In the end, Tuguegarao and Cagayan players hugged it out in show of sportsmanship, unity, and respect, shouting “Tuguegarao, Cagayan!”

For the Wow city’s coach Leonardo Batang, Tuguegarao City, only settling for bronze medal in last year’s meet, had been training for three years just to make it to the finals. He said, had they come up short this year, it will be game over for the hopeful team.

“Actually itong grupo na ito, three years naming inintak yan. Two years kami sa Ilagan sila’t sila ‘yan. Sabi ko sa kanila sa third year, pag hindi pa natin makuha ito, bahala na. Ayan pinagsikapan nila. Ngayong taon, ayan todo training sila,” Batang said.

For Tuguegarao, the years of training has finally paid off.

“Hindi ko ma-explain kasi first time ko rin makapasok sa finals so definitely, nagtiwala ako sa mga bata. Siguro yun na rin yung naging daan, nagtiwala ako sa skills nila sa galing nila at saka bawat isa sa kanila, nagtulung-tulong,” Batang said.

Meanwhile, it was also a bitter end for previous gold medalist Isabela as Nueva Vizcaya beat the majestic province in yesterday’s game.

Nueva Vizcaya’s tight defense overcame Isabela, gaining a second chance for the championship after landing silver medals last year.

Isabela now faces Cagayan for the second-runner up spot.

As of 11:10 AM of Wednesday, February 28, Cagayan still leads in the overall rankings with 83 gold medals, followed by Isabela at 55 gold medals, Nueva Vizcaya at 49 golds, and the host city of Tuguegarao at 36 golds. Northernforum.net
