Many people don’t realize it, but Windows has a hidden mode that can unlock your PC’s full performance potential without changing any hardware components. If you know where to look, you can take your system’s power to new heights with a simple tweak. Here’s how to do it.
Understanding Windows Power Modes
If you’re using Windows 10 or Windows 11, you’re likely familiar with the different power profiles available. These profiles, which help manage power consumption and performance, come in three basic options: Power Saver, Balanced, and High Performance. Most users toggle between these settings to either maximize battery life or get more power when needed. Interestingly, these options aren’t just limited to laptops—they can also be adjusted on desktops.
But what many people don’t know is that Windows has another hidden power mode that can push your PC to even greater performance levels, and it’s much more than the standard high-performance setting. Before diving into the details, let’s clarify two important categories of settings that are often confused with each other.
There’s the Power Mode, accessible through the Settings app under System > Power & Sleep, where you can switch between the three basic profiles. These are convenient, but they’re not what we’re focusing on today.
The second, more advanced setting is the Power Plan, which can be found in the Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options. This one also offers three options: Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance. However, there’s a fourth, even more powerful setting that’s tucked away by default. It’s called Ultimate Performance, and it can unleash your system’s full potential.
Activating the Ultimate Performance Mode
Normally, Ultimate Performance Mode is hidden on consumer PCs and is typically reserved for high-end workstations running Windows Pro. But here’s the good news: this mode is actually available on Windows Home too, and all you need is a little trick to reveal it.
Here’s how you can unlock it:
- Open PowerShell by right-clicking the Start Menu in your taskbar, and select Windows Terminal (Admin).
- In the PowerShell window that appears, type or paste the following command and press Enter:
- Once you press Enter, you’ll see a GUID entry appear, indicating the power scheme has been added.
- Next, open the Start Menu again and type “Power”. Click on the search result labeled Choose a power plan.
- On the next page, click on Show additional plans and then select Ultimate Performance.
That’s it! You’ve now unlocked Windows’ Ultimate Performance Mode.
What to Expect from Ultimate Performance ?
While this hidden mode might sound like a game-changer, it’s important to note that it does come with some trade-offs. Since Ultimate Performance focuses on maximizing your system’s speed and responsiveness, it will use more power and could lead to a noticeable drop in battery life on laptops. Additionally, your PC’s components will generate more heat, which means the cooling system will work harder—and as a result, the fans might get louder.
Given these effects, you might want to avoid using this mode in quiet or public spaces, such as in an open office or during travel. Instead, reserve it for when you truly need the extra power, such as when performing intensive tasks like photo editing, video editing, 3D modeling, or playing demanding video games.
By unlocking this mode, you’re essentially giving your PC the ability to run at full throttle when needed, without having to upgrade any hardware. Just be mindful of its energy consumption, and use it wisely to get the most out of your system.
