Buguey is first NCCA cultural mapping program recipient in Cagayan

BUGUEY, Cagayan ( Arapangmedia) – This coastal municipality will write history today as the first-ever town in Cagayan to receive grant on cultural mapping program from the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Arvin Manuel Villalon, NCCA-Consultant on cultural mapping said Buguey has earlier sent its letter of intent to the agency ahead of all the 27 other municipalities and the lone city of Tuguegarao.

The grant-request was in consonance with the earlier plan of Local Chief Executive Mayor Lloyd Antiporda on the establishment of a folk museum in this historic town. Earlier, the LGU reported of the building’s completion middle of this year aptly called Buguey Folk Museum established from the former police station at the backside of the town’s gymnasium.

‘We wanted to show to the world what heritage we have as a people and for fellow-Bugueyanos to appreciate and protect these heritage housed in a museum,” Antiporda told The Northern Forum early last year.

Environment Planner May Jocelyn Tolosa, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer expressed anticipation on the result of the mapping, part of possible collection will be displayed at the folk museum next year.

Buguey is a rich repository of Cagayan history and culture not to mention its water resources and the 14-kilometer Buguey River, now the focus of a special conservation and protection project granted by the UN Ramsar Convention.

The river is one of those cited by the said convention held in Iran as a wetland of international importance in 1998. Tagged as the mud Crab Capital of the Philippines by Manila Bulletin in 2000, the town is home to the four centuries church of St. Anne.

Antiporda has called on Bugueyanos worldwide to help the newly-established Buguey Folk Museum through artifacts donations, sales or lease to the local government unit. “The museum when fully operational next year will cater to Cagayanos particularly those in Northeast Cagayan corridor,” he added.

Meanwhile, plans are underway for the declaration of the more than 50 year-old Banurbur Dam in Barangay San Lorenzo as a heritage site.

The week-long cultural mapping workshop will start tomorrow at Thea’s resort at Poblacion, Buguey.
