Plastic container with suspected shabu found off Isabela seas

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- A plastic container with suspected illegal drugs was found floating off the seas of Isabela province on Monday, February 5.

In a phone interview on Tuesday, February 6, Senior Inspector Jonathan Ramos, Divilacan town police chief, said the plastic container was discovered by fishermen of Barangay Dipudo, who also later turned over the item to police.

Ramos described the container as rectangular, measuring about 4 inches by 3 inches, and is sealed with a packaging tape.

The contraband is set to be transported to Ilagan City on Tuesday for chemistry tests at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Isabela crime laboratory, the chief of police said.

“Bagamat sa deskripsyon [at] sa histura ng kargamento ay kahalintulad nito ang shabu, upang makatiyak tayo ay kinakailangan natin itong ipasuri sa chemist ng [Philippine National Police] PNP Crime Laboratory Office,” Ramos said.

Meanwhile, Cagayan Valley regional police director Chief Superintendent Jose Mario Espino ordered the an in-depth investigation to determine how the plastic container was salvaged off the Divilacan waters.

Espino warned authorities that syndicates might use the coastal towns to transport illegal drugs as the government continue with its drug war.

“Gawin nating prayoridad ang pagsugpo sa iligal na droga dahil maraming buhay ang masisira nito. Umaapela ako sa mga mamamayan na tulungan kami upang mapagtagumpayan natin ang ating adhikaing linisin ang ating komyunidad sa iligal na droga,” Espino said.

The coastal towns of Cagayan, Ilocos Norte and Isabela had been earlier tagged by authorities as entry point of illegal drugs coming from China, Taiwan and Hongkong.

In July 2017, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) declared the coastal towns of Divilacan and Maconacon drug free.

In his visit in PRO2 in October 2017, PNP Chief Police Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said there are reports of smuggled drug shipments being thrown at sea and tracked with the use of global positioning system (GPS). These are eventually located and taken by locals who then do business in land, Dela Rosa said.

Meanwhile, PRO2 reaffirmed their continuous cooperation with PDEA in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Over the weekend, police caught four drug suspects in separate operations in Isabela.

Police said the suspects were Blakener Manuel, 24, from Barangay 2, Jones, Isabela; Reymundo Macarilay, 39, from Barangay Tuguegarao, Echague, Isabela; Rolly Cendaña, 39, from Siempre Viva sur, Mallig, Isabela; and Julius Bulusan, 21, from Barangay Olongapo, Mallig, Isabela.
