TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – A former member of the New People’s Army (NPA) has been reunited with his family after 40 years of hiding with the reds.
This, after the former NPA was presented to the media by authorities.
According to 17th Infantry Battalion – 5th Infantry Division Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Angelo Saquiquit, the former rebel was identified as “Ka Nestor” and has turned his head away from the government since 1980.
Saquiquit said that the 79-year old Ka Nestor was found inside a kubo in Sitio Lagum, Barangay Lipatan, Sto. Niño, Cagayan during an operation.
“Si Ka Nestor po ay mahinang mahina noong nakita namin siya sa Sitio Lagum. Nakahiga nalang at hindi makatayo. Hindi po namin siya makausap. Ang nabanggit niya po ay taga Ilocos daw po siya”, he said.
(“Ka Nestor was weak when we found him inside a small nipa hut in Sitio Lagum. He was just lying and cannot stand up. We can’t communicate with him. The only thing he uttered was that he was from Ilocos”, he said.)
“Hirap na hirap po kaming makuha ang loob ni Ka Nestor para sumama at magbalik sa pamayanan”, Saquiquit added.
(“We had a hard time trying to persuade him to come with us”, Saquiquit added.)
Meanwhile, Saquiquit said that Ka Nestor will be transported back home to Ilocos Norte to reunite with his relatives.
The Local Government of Ilocos Norte will receive and give him financial assistance to start his life again.
Ka Nestor is 79 years old who originally resides from Piddig, Ilocos Norte.
Furthermore, Saquiquit encourages the reds to come back to the government.
“We are willing to help you and accept you. We are doing are efforts to reach out for us to End the Local Communist and Armed Conflict (ELCAC).
Hence, the government fortifies its counterterror scheme by creating NTF-ELCAC stipulated in Executive Order No. 70 (EO 7O) signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in December 2018.
