The French rail giant Alstom has just secured a significant deal that will see it modernize trains on one of the UK’s busiest and most historic railway routes. This new contract, worth €29 million (around £24.5 million), is a step towards the modernization of the rail network connecting London and Cambridge, a vital corridor in the heart of England’s rail system.
A major contract for modernizing and maintaining the Electrostar trains
The contract between Alstom and GTR (Greater Thameslink Railway) involves upgrading 30 trains from the 379 Electrostar series. These trains, originally built by Bombardier between 2010 and 2011, were previously leased by Greater Anglia and are now operated by GTR following their acquisition by Porterbrook in March 2024. Alstom, which acquired Bombardier Transportation in 2021, will fully renovate these trains to ensure they meet modern standards and continue to provide reliable service.
In addition to the renovations, this partnership includes ongoing maintenance of the Electrostar fleet, along with the provision of spare parts for other train series, such as the 377 and 387 models. This comprehensive approach is aimed at ensuring that the trains, which are essential for services between King’s Cross, Cambridge, Peterborough, and King’s Lynn, continue to operate safely and efficiently.
Deploying cutting-edge technology for train maintenance
Alstom is also introducing advanced technologies to enhance the maintenance of the trains. The company plans to use the HealthHub platform, a state-of-the-art system that collects real-time operational data from the trains. This technology will monitor over 200 parameters every 30 seconds, including speed, ambient temperature, and GPS coordinates. The system’s ability to track such a wide range of data will allow for more proactive maintenance, ensuring that issues are identified before they become serious problems.
This system will also send immediate alerts if the trains deviate from their standard operational parameters, helping to prevent potential breakdowns. By catching issues early, the platform improves both safety for passengers and the reliability of the services.
Specialized maintenance at Crewe
The ongoing maintenance and repairs for these trains will be handled by Alstom’s specialists at various technical centers, including the Crewe facility. This site, which focuses on bogie and traction motor repairs, also oversees crucial systems like heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, ensuring that the trains maintain consistent performance year-round.
The state of the British rail network
The UK rail network is one of the oldest and busiest in Europe, stretching over 15,900 km of track and serving nearly 2,570 stations. While much of the network remains heavily concentrated in the South East, with London as a major hub, it still faces numerous challenges.
