TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- In celebration of Fire Prevention Month, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 02 here aims to focus in increasing fire prevention awareness of youth.
BFP Public Information Services Chief Fire Chief Inspector Aristotle Atal said on Tuesday, March 13, BFP sees the youth as effective force multipliers in the campaign on fire safety and prevention.
Atal said fire prevention awareness has been included in school curriculum.
He also said BFP chooses kiddie fire marshals in schools to further promote fire prevention awareness and leadership. Kiddie fire marshals will also lead in school drills and other non-fire activities awareness campaign.
Further, BFP said, kiddie fire marshals will have an edge later on should they decide to apply and join the bureau.
Consistent with their goal on youth-centered awareness campaign, BFP also held various games and contests such as art contests and poster making at SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown.
BFP kicked off Fire Prevention Month through a motorcade on Thursday, March 01.
Aside from this, BFP also held a bike fest participated in by government agencies and bike clubs, and a unity walk.
Meanwhile, Atal told media there was a drop in fire incidents in Cagayan Valley in 2017 compared to 2016. He said this was a result of increasing awareness of the public.
The former city fire marshal also recognized the cities and towns with “best practices” in preventing and addressing fire incidents. These are Santiago City, City of Ilagan in Isabela, and Baggao in Cagayan.
He said this is because the said areas include the community in fire prevention by training barangay fire volunteers and equipping them with equipment.
Atal also encouraged the public to report fires immediately instead of taking and posting photos and videos, or going live online. Northernforum.net
