In the realm of Italian music, few songs have left as significant a mark as "Gelato al cioccolato," a hit from Pupo’s self-titled album that graced the airwaves in 1979. Over the years, this catchy tune has been enveloped in mystery, particularly following revelations from the artist himself about its true meaning. To many listeners, the lyrics seem to revolve around the simple pleasure of enjoying ice cream, but Pupo has made it clear that there’s far more beneath the surface.
The song’s lyrics were penned by Cristiano Malgioglio, whose inspiration allegedly stemmed from a chance encounter with a Moroccan boy. However, Malgioglio recently set the record straight in an interview with Corriere della Sera, dismissing this narrative and offering his own perspective on the song’s origins.
What’s the real story behind the lyrics?
In his candid remarks, Malgioglio noted, "Why would I need to go to Morocco to find companionship? I’m playing along because Pupo is a dear friend and quite the character. However, I don’t see any royalties coming my way from Russia and Kazakhstan. They even say it’s Putin’s favorite song."
So, if not a tale of exotic encounters, where do the words come from? Malgioglio recounted a phone call from Pupo’s record producer, Freddy Naggiar, who suggested that Malgioglio write a "fresh" song for the budding artist. After a moment of inspiration involving chocolate pudding and a mix-up with sugar and salt, the unique flavor of "Gelato al cioccolato" was born.
Moreover, Malgioglio’s career is dotted with instances of censorship and controversy. One notable example is his song "L’importante è finire," associated with the legendary Mina, which faced radio bans due to its perceived risqué content. Reflecting on that time, he recalled, "I had already encountered censorship with ‘L’importante è finire,’ which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Some puritans took issue with it. My mother scolded me, saying, ‘What rubbish have you written?’ But when she read it, she found it beautiful. People interpreted it in strange ways; I’m almost embarrassed to say. Yet, it simply tells the story of a couple parting ways while making love—today, it’s a classic, and Mina went wild for it."
Malgioglio’s journey doesn’t stop there. The song "Ancora, ancora, ancora," also by Mina, ignited its own share of scandal, and his entire career is marked by similar episodes. "I was always ahead of my time. For Amanda Lear, I wrote ‘Ho fatto l’amore con me.’ When Raffaella Carrà ’s Boncompagni played me ‘A far l’amore comincia tu,’ I thought it sounded childish and said, ‘This piece is awful.’ I preferred to create ‘Forte forte forte,’ which also carries erotic undertones. I compose from a woman’s perspective, not a man’s."
The intersections of his career with other musical legends are equally notable. Malgioglio reminisced about his collaborations, such as with Franco Califano, who persistently urged him to work together, and Adriano Celentano, who once arrived at a studio, singing entirely different lyrics to a melody that was unrecognizable to Malgioglio. "I was entranced; he could do anything," he admitted, referencing Celentano’s aspirations to return to Rai, where he seems to receive little response.
Shifting gears from music, Malgioglio also opened up about love and his Turkish boyfriend, Onur. "Love is a gentle touch; it’s going to the beach, not just sex under the sheets. I feel good, happy because my feelings are reciprocated. What have I missed? Children, dearly. But I have my grandchildren."
