The launch of Grok 3, the latest artificial intelligence model from xAI, Elon Musk’s company, has sparked a wave of controversy. The model, which Musk described as being on a quest for truth, is facing allegations that it censored negative feedback, especially when it came to Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
Grok 3 censors certain responses
The controversy began on February 17, 2025, when Grok 3 was introduced as an AI designed to prioritize truth. However, users quickly noticed that when they asked about figures like Elon Musk or Donald Trump, the AI seemed to avoid mentioning them, particularly in a context that involved criticism. For instance, when users enabled the “Think” mode and asked, “Who is the biggest spreader of misinformation?” Grok 3’s reasoning chain specifically instructed the AI not to mention Musk or Trump.

This wasn’t just a random glitch. After testing the system, TechCrunch confirmed that the AI was indeed omitting these two figures from its answers. However, by February 24, 2025, a change was noticed—Grok 3 started including Donald Trump in its responses about misinformation. This shift has only added fuel to the debate about how AI models handle controversial figures and their associated narratives.
The backlash and misinformation claims
The controversy surrounding Grok 3’s censorship couldn’t have come at a more charged time. Both Musk and Trump are figures often associated with the spreading of misinformation. In fact, just the week prior, Trump made a claim about Volodymyr Zelensky’s popularity in Ukraine, stating it was only 4%. However, a Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) poll in February 2025 put Zelensky’s approval rating at a solid 57%. This discrepancy highlights the concerns that both figures—Musk with his social media influence and Trump with his political commentary—can at times be sources of misleading or outright false information.
The AI’s avoidance of these figures has raised questions about its neutrality, especially as it was designed to be “politically neutral,” according to Musk’s promises. His aim, as he stated at launch, was for Grok 3 to be free from any political bias, particularly leaning away from “woke” stances and left-wing perspectives, particularly on sensitive topics like transgender rights, diversity programs, and social inequality. The controversy over its initial reluctance to address certain issues points to the complexities AI faces when it comes to political alignment and ensuring fairness in its responses.
In addition to the censorship concerns, OpenAI has raised issues about Grok 3‘s performance during benchmarking tests. Despite these criticisms, Musk’s company continues to maintain that the model operates with minimal filtering, designed to allow for a “raw” exchange of ideas.
As with any breakthrough technology, the rollout of Grok 3 has been rocky, with many questioning how much control AI should have over the narratives it perpetuates. Whether Grok 3 can truly live up to its promise of unbiased truth remains to be seen, but for now, it continues to stir debate over the fine line between free expression and censorship.
