Ompong may become super typhoon before Cagayan landfall -report

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) may be classified as super typhoon before its expected landfall in Cagayan on Saturday, September 15, ABS-CBN News said in a report.

State weather bureau PAGASA weather forecaster Gener Quitlong told ABS-CBN News that Ompong may reach up to 210 kph to 220 kph maximum winds.

However, it is expected to weaken as it makes landfall over Cagayan.

In its weather bulletin issued 5 am on Thursday, September 13, PAGASA placed 16 provinces in tropical cyclone Signal No. 1.

These are the provinces of:

  • Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Ifugao
  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • Quirino
  • Aurora
  • Quezon including Polillo Island
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Albay
  • Sorsogon
  • Catanduanes
  • Burias and Ticao islands
  • Northern Samar

Ompong has sustained maximum winds of up to 205 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 255 kph.

The typhoon was last located at 855 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, and moving West Northwest at a speed of  30 kph

Occasional rains with gusty winds will be experienced over the areas under Signal No. 1, PAGASA said.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday late evening or Sunday early morning, September 16.
