TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is now accepting applications for the enhanced GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP) for incoming freshmen for Academic Year 2018-2019.
Interested applicants may apply until Friday, June 15.
In a press release, GSIS President and General Manager Jesus Clint Aranas said “out of 400 college scholarship slots for children or dependents of low-income GSIS members this year, at least 40 are allotted to dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo or single parents.”
“Since meeting their basic needs is already a struggle for a lot of our members, they need support in other vital expenses like defraying the cost of college education, “ Aranas said.
The state pension fund said qualified GSIS members may nominate their children or dependent to the scholarship if they are incoming freshmen who have been accepted in any four- or five-year course or in priority courses in Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-recognized schools.
“Children or dependents of active members and children of permanent total disability (PTD) pensioners who are less than 60 years old may be nominated to the program,” GSIS added.
Active members can also nominate scholars only if they are permanent government employees with at least three years of government service, have a salary grade of 24 or below or its equivalent job level, and have paid premium contributions for the last six months.
Further, GSIS said single or married active members who are childless may nominate one child or dependent who rely on them for support.
PTD pensioners below 60 years old may nominate their children only, GSIS said.
GSIS will shoulder the scholar’s actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not exceeding P40,000 per academic year through GSP.
GSP scholars will also receive P3,000 monthly allowance.
Scholars who will graduate with Latin honors cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude, will also get incentives of P20,000; P30,000; and P50,000, respectively.
As part of the pension fund’s corporate social responsibility program, GSIS has been granting scholarships to deserving children or dependents of low-income members and pensioners since 1998, President Aranas said.
Some 3,283 scholarship grants have been awarded under the program at present, Aranas added.
