Cagayan Valley came it at the lowest spot in Palaro in 2008 and 2009.

The region began to improve its standing from 2010, stepping from 17th place to 14th place in 2012.

After this, Cagayan Valley experienced a roller-coaster ride until 2016 wherein the region was 16th place among other bets in the annual games.

Netizens on Facebook noted the region’s standing this year. Some even commented that Cagayan Valley, along with Cordillera Administrative Region, is one of the most improved regions in terms of Palaro performance in the medal tally.

Athletes who contributed to the region’s medal haul this year includes Algin Gomez, a high school student from Aparri town in Cagayan province.

Gomez posted 6.96 meters to get the gold medal for long jump-secondary boys.

Tuguegarao City’s Rashied Faith Burdeos posted 10.13 meters for shot put elementary girls gave Region 2 its second gold medal.

Meanwhile, Jalil Sephraim Taguinod set new marks for 50-meter breaststroke for elementary boys.

In a press briefing on Saturday, April 21, DepEd Undersecretary for Legislative Liaison Office, External Partnerships Service and School Sports Tonisito Umali praised athletes from outside National Capital Region who broke records.

Umali even mentioned the name of Taguinod.

“Tayo po ay natutuwa tuwing meron pong record na nasisira. Ang pinapakita lang po niyan ay talaga pong humuhusay na po ang ating mga atleta. At ang nakakatuwa po rito ay hindi lamang concentrated sa NCR o Region 4-A yung number one or two kalimitan pati Region 06, 01, 02, [at] 03 ang nakakasira ng records po natin ngayon,” he said.

Next year, Palarong Pambansa will be held in Davao region, President Rodrigo Duterte’s home region. Northernforum.net
