Cagayano agribusiness awardee to new businessmen: ‘Be true to your work’

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- “Ang pagnenegosyo [ay] hindi yung bara-bara. You have to think kung ano yung kita mo. Wag kang mag-overspend. Kung ito yung income mo, stay. Dito ka lang muna. Huwag ka munang mag-aapura.”

This is the advice of 2017 Dangal ng Lahing Cagayano Gintong Medalya for Business and Entrepreneurship Awardee Miguel Decena Jr to new business owners who aim for success in their respective industries.

The Enrileño businessman guested in Cagayan Information Office’s Pagdidinnamagan: Kapehan sa Kapitolyo on Monday, April 30, to share his life story and insights on agribusiness in the province.

“Maganda ang negosyo pag nasundan mo ito pero pag pinangunahan mo yung negosyo, bagsak ka,” Decena said.

Decena cautioned business owners of overspending and the fast change in lifestyle because this is the usual failure of small and micro-businesses.

“Be true to your work. You always count to your profit. Avoid over-expenditure kasi yung failure kasi nung ibang negosyante is mas mabilis yung upgrading nila ng lifestyle kaysa sa income. Nakadepende sila sa five-six, dun sila lumulubog,” Decena said.

Before becoming a successful businessman, Decena first started as a tricycle driver, jeepney driver, and vegetable vendor. He told the media that he first observed the local market after spending a decade in Manila. In 1992, he engaged in the chicken industry.

Yet, he achieved his big break as he was granted opportunities by RFN Sweet Foods Corporation. In 2007, he already took over the management of the said corporation.

Decena became a hauler, contract grower, distributor, and eventually, the supplier of dressed chicken in Region 02 and Ilocos.

Decena has received various awards such as the 2000 Jambi Madrigal Foundation Idolo ng Bayan Award, Leadership Award of Rotary District 3770 International (Bulacan to Batanes), Most Outstanding President during his time as head of Rotary Club of Tuguegarao, 2013 Department of Agriculture Agrientrepreneur Award National, the 2015 DOLE National Award for Productivity Olympic, and the 2017 Dangal ng Lahing Cagayano Gintong Medalya..

As a Cagayano awardee, Decena advised new business owners to think globally and embrace new technology in order to become more competitive. This is the same reason, Decena said, that he has put up state of the art feed mills financed by Department of Trade and Industry.

The businessman has now set his sights to a breeder farm and hatchery to become self-supporting. Such a project, he said, is a good program to address quarantine in times of bird flu outbreaks. Decena is also eyeing to expand in swine production

For Decena, business is no easy task but having good management skills, appropriate lifestyle, and being honest to others is enough to guarantee success.

“Be good. Maging totoo ka lang sa pamamalakad mo sa negosyo, maging totoo ka lang sa mga bangko [at] maging totoo ka lang sa mga tao. Siyempre wag natin kalimutan ang nasa taas na nagbibigay ng biyaya sa atin,” he said. Northernforum.net
