TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Filipino boxer and Senator Manny Pacquiao will be the guest speaker during the opening of the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA) meet on Friday, February 23.
Pacquiao is set to open the highest sports meet in the region, with about 7,000 athletes, coaches and visitors are set to participate.
Tuguegarao Mayor Jefferson Soriano in an interview on Wednesday, February 21, said Pacquiao is set to arrive via private plane on Friday. He will proceed to city hall for a meet and greet and press briefing.
Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur town councilor Chavit Singson is also set to arrive to grace the opening program, which will be held at the Cagayan Sports Complex.
Soriano said the preparations for the sports event is on top of similar hosting of two other national conventions by the local city civil registrars and the Imam Conventions of the Moslem communities in Luzon and the Visayas.
The DedEd Division of Tuguegarao City was supposed to host the annual sports competition in 2017 but was forced to begged off as an aftermath of typhoon Lawin which devastated the province and in particular the lone city in 2016. The DepEd Division of the City of Ilagan gladly took over as host that year.
Soriano said the entire community has worked together to ensure the successful staging of CAVRAA and has tap barangay officials and the populace to assist in the hosting of athletes inside the various elementary and secondary schools within the city.
“The barangays will work hand in hand with the city management,” Soriano said. He disclosed that for the first time, city councilors were likewise assigned an area where they will call the shots as far as management on the various billeting centers are concern.
Close to more than 5,000 athletes, at 600 per delegation will come from the four city and five provincial divisions all over the region aside from some 700 technical officials to manage the events.
At least ten billeting centers for athletes and nine for technical officials have been identified by the city government as early last year where policemen will be deployed as security to be beefed up by Barangay Tanods.
The City Police said more than 200 policemen will likewise be deployed in the various key areas in the city plus an additional 80 of them to man the various venues of the games while two mobile teams will work on a 24 –hour basis to ensure security to delegations and the public.
Meanwhile, City Division Superintendent Dr. Denison Domingo said his office is all set to stage the CAVRAA meet and expressed appreciation for the financial assistance extended by the City government at Ph23 million.
“ We made sure that the delegates will not forget their stay in our city as we have embarked on various non-sports events during the entire duration of the games, “ he said.
He added that for the first time, CAVRAA delegates will be treated to a pancit festival while the now-popular Tuguegarao Afi (fire) dancers will perform. With reports from Benjie De Yro/Northernforum.net
