TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- This city’s Mayor Jefferson Soriano told hundreds of elected Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials who took their oath of offices on Saturday, May 26, to “forget politics” as he vowed for support to the youth officials.
Soriano administered the oath of hundreds of SK kagawads and 48 SK chairmen in Valley Hotel in Peñablanca, Cagayan. The oathtaking was held after they underwent training required by SK Reform Act.
In his speech, Soriano said the city had long been waiting for the election of SK officials, citing their problem whenever they need youth groups to tap for the city’s programs and projects.
The mayor also welcomed the officials in the field of public service as he reminded them to be “above politics.”
The new SK law had been crafted to curb possibilities to be used by politicians to advance their political interests, which gained the SK an infamous brand as the “breeding ground for corruption and political dynasties.”
The new law prohibited SK candidates who have relatives up to second civil degree of affinity or consanguinity to any incumbent elected national official or to any incumbent elected regional, provincial, city, municipal, or barangay official, in the locality where he seeks to be elected.
“Kalimutan muna ninyo ang diperensiya ninyo sa isa’t isa. Forget politics. Serve your preference…because when you serve your barangay, you serve your beloved city,” Soriano told SK officials.
Soriano on Saturday announced he will request the city council to allot P1 million from the city’s supplemental budget for the SK to start with.
He also urged them to unite the youth in barangays so they can “fully” serve their constituents.
Ahead of the election for the SK federation president, Soriano said he wanted the SK to head the barangay councils’ committee on environment. It was not clear yet, however, if he also wanted the same for the city council.
“Because for a long long time, my dear friends, you will inherit Tuguegarao. One among you will become mayor, one among you will become vice mayor, or councilor, congressman, and governor…as early as now, pagandahin ninyo ang Tuguegarao,” he said.
