1 cop killed as NPA attacks Maddela police station

MADDELA, Quirino – The police force stationed in this remote town were stunned when about 50 NPA guerillas from the Venerando Villacillo Command aboard motorcycles, two vans and an elf truck assaulted the police station at around 10:30 PM on Saturday. A firefight that lasted until midnight left one policeman dead.

The fatality was identified by witnesses as PO2 Jerome Cardenas who carries the designation “Court Processing Officer” of the station.

“They wore camouflage uniforms, we thought the army and the police are fighting,” says one of the four inmates occupying the prison cell.

Traces of bullet holes could be seen all over the building’s façade. The SOCO Team did not allow the media to come in until 10:00 AM. the following day.

“It is like New Year’s eve. Hours of loud automatic gunfire kept us awake the whole night,” says an internet shop owner in the nearby Public Market.

Before the police could issue an official statement, the NPA is quick to send their own statement. One handwritten paper was handed over by someone who left immediately to a Bombo Radyo reporter. A copy was shared to colleagues in the media.

“Ang taktikal na opensiba ay tugon sa kahilingan ng mamamayan ng bigyan ng hustisya ang paghahasik ng terorismo ng rehimeng Duterte sa mga magsasaka at mga katutubo at sa malawakang paglabag nito sa mga karapatang pantao na nagdulot ng matinding pangamba at takot sa kanilang buhay at kabuhayan,” the statement signed by of NPA-Quirino reads.

The NPA also accused the 86th IB of “encamping in school buildings that resulted into cancellation of classes” in Barangay Ysmael of this town.

Another message sent through text messaging shared by a police intelligence operative claimed that “13 high powered firearms were seized from the station” during the raid. The sender identified itself as Venerando Villacillo Command.

Interviewed witnesses confirmed an earlier report that PCI Jhun-Jhun Balisi, OIC station chief of Maddela PNP, SPO4 Antonio Siriban and PO2 Albano were “abducted” by the NPA. However, they were released unharmed when the rebels reached their lair at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountains.

Balisi apologized to the media for not being able to speak right away. Policemen were expecting the arrival of P/Chief Supt. Eliseo Tam Rasco, PNP Regional Office 02 Director but as of press time, he has not arrived yet.

In another development, it was found out that the NPA also burned a ten-wheeler dump truck and the controller of a crusher in a quarry along their escape route. The burned equipment belonged to a certain Triple A company, witnesses told. A reporter showed pictures of the burned truck. –Abe Almirol/Northernforum.net
