Robredo visits Lawin-hit victims in Cagayan

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday, October 21, arrived in Cagayan province to check on the conditions of the residents who suffered the brunt the of super typhoon Lawin.

Robredo, who just arrived from Ecuador and went straight to Cagayan, said she immediately went to the province to have an “initial idea” on the typhoon’s damage in residential houses.

She first talked to Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba and went to visit the typhoon victims in Peñablanca town, the area where Lawin made its landfall.

Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba told Robredo that, initially, 500 houses were fully damaged and more than 5000 were partially damaged.

Mamba said the data could rise as some reports have yet reach the provincial office.

Earlier, the provincial disaster team that nearly 100 percent of the houses were either partially or fully damaged.

Robredo, the chairman of the National Housing Authority (NHA), said she could not extend an emergency assistance yet but promised to do what she can to help the province.

“Yung emergency assistance [wala muna.] Inalis yun sa amin at nilagay sa OCD (Office of the Civil Defense). Pero tutulong po ako,” Robredo told Mamba.

She said the NHA will extend help in the rehabilitation but proposed to conduct a study on how to mix the rehabilitation and mitigation efforts to lessen the impact of the next typhoons.

She said the houses to be rehabilitated should be typhoon-resilient.

Robredo also said the she will talk to the Social Security Services on how to increase the disaster relief disbursement.
