TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The mayor of Palanan town in Isabela province died in a vehicular accident late Thursday evening, December 15 in Santiago City.
Palanan Mayor Rodolfo Bernardo Jr was proclaimed dead on arrival at a local hospital, while three others, including the driver were hurt.
In a report, Superintendent Genato Birung, head of the Traffic Management Group of the Santiago City police, said the group Bernardo were traversing the Maharlika Highway when the driver lost control of the wheels.
The victims were on board a Toyota Fortuner with a plate number of ZTY 898.
Birung said the driver, identified as certain Rommel Alvarez, reportedly overtook another vehicular, not noticing a hole from an ongoing road repair.
Alvarez complained that the he did not notice the hole because of lack of signage in the area.
The vehicle tumbled up to more than five meters until it bumped into an irrigation canal.
With Bernardo and Alvarez were Engineers Emerson Velarde and Melito Casasola, both local officials of Divilacan and Palanan towns respectively.
The victims were on their way home to Cauayan City after attending an event of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Manila. –Raymon Dullana/Northernforum.net
