Lawin-hit residents to spend Christmas, New Year without power

CAGAYAN, Philippines- Some villages in this province will have a dark Christmas and New Year celebration as the power have yet to be restored.

More than 2 months after super typhoon Lawin hit Cagayan, several villages in the towns of Piat, Enrile, Tuao, Solana, Rizal, Amulung, Alcala, Iguig and Penablanca are yet to have their electric lines fixed.

In a phone interview on Saturday, December 24, Frances Obispo, spokesperson of Cagayan Electric Cooperative (Cagelco) I, said they have yet to fix the lines in some of the far-flung areas.

These areas include those that remain isolated due to broken bridges, swollen rivers and mountainous residences.

“Isa sa mga rason po ay hindi makapasok ang aming equipment upang sa ganun ay makapagpatayo ng mga poste,” Obispo told Rappler.

(One of the reasons is that our equipment could not pass through yet to put up electric posts.)

“Most probably [magdiriwang sila ng pasko at bagong taon na walang kuryente.] So i-extend muna nila ang kanilang pasensya dahil gustuhin man namin na magka-kuryente na sila ay hindi naman namin makakaya pa,” she added.

(Most probably [they’ll celebrate Christmas and New Year without power.] So we ask them to extend their patience because in as much as we really wanted to bring back the power, we really could not comply yet.)

Obispo said less than 10% of the homes in the southern district of Cagayan do not have power yet.

She said they are set to fully restore the power by January next year.
