Cagayan braces another strong typhoon month after Ompong

CAGAYAN, Philippines- Still recovering from the wrath of strong Typhoon Ompong in September, Cagayan province has started preparing for yet another strong typhoon.

Typhoon Rosita, internationally named as Yutu, is expected to make landfall over Cagayan-Isabela area, state weather bureau PAGASA said in its weather bulletin issued 11 am on Sunday, October 28.

As PAGASA warned Rosita could follow the same track and could be as strong as Ompong, authorities and residents here anticipate potential heavy destruction.

Typhoon Ompong left thousands of homes damaged, billions of agricultural crops destroyed, and at least 6 people dead in the province.

Just on Thursday, October 25, electric cooperatives who helped in the restoration of power were sent off through a ceremony as they accomplished full restoration more than a month after the typhoon.

Disaster preparations

On Sunday, Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba led a pre-disaster assessment as he convened the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC).

In the meeting, Mamba ordered disaster response and rescue teams to prepare especially the residents of Southern Cagayan.

The governor urged local authorities to evacuate residents in high-risk prone areas as early as Monday, October 29.

Weather forecasters said the eye of the typhoon could hit Luzon landmass morning of Tuesday, October 30.

To prepare residents, Mamba on Saturday, October 27, ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in the province on Monday. Suspension of works in government and private offices could also be suspended Monday afternoon.

Search and rescue equipment have also been ordered pre-positioned in strategic areas in the province.
