TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa ordered the Cagayan provincial police to solve cases of killings perpetrated by motorcycle riding-in-tandem criminals.
Dela Rosa said if the police cannot prevent the killings, they should at least solve it.
“Ang instruction ko sa kanila is that kung hindi ‘nyo kayang i-prevent itong occurrence ng riding-in-tandem na namamaril, you have to solve it,” Dela Rosa said in an interview with reporters.
Dela Rosa said he will not set a deadline in the solving of cases but police should not “inefficient and ineffective” in dealing with such murder cases.
He said, however, the Cagayan police, headed by Senior Superintendent Warren Tolito, has his trust.
Tolito, according to him, was his personal choice to lead the war on drugs and criminality in the province.
Dela Rosa also said critics of the government’s war on drugs may use the riding-in-tandem killings against the police force.
“Otherwise, kung hindi natin sino-solve, iisipin naman ng taong bayan at gagamitin ng mga kritiko na kagagawan natin ito. Pero kung pwede, we have to prevent it para hindi tayo pagbibintangan na kung hindi man tayo ang may gawa, pagbibintangan tayo na tino-tolerate natin dahil gusto nating mangyari iyon,” he said.
Spate of killings
The issue on killings of riding-in-tandem were brought up during the visit of Dela Rosa in the Cagayan Valley regional police camp as there were spate of killings recently.
In September, lawyer Neil Agustin, the regional head of the Civil Service Commission – Cagayan Valley, was shot dead by riding-in-tandem criminals in Tuguegarao.
Agustin’s case was only one of the several cases recorded around the provinces.
In October, a Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) agent was killed in Tuguegarao a day before he is set to testify on a drug case in Nueva Vizcaya.
Former Amulung town vice mayor Alexander Pascual was also killed on Wednesday, October 4, in Barangay Carig, also in Tuguegarao. Northernforum.net
