TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Social Security System (SSS) and Philippine Inforamtion Agency (PIA) Region 02 conducted a forum on SSS benefits and services for workers of private and government sectors here on Friday, May 11.
PIA 02 Regional Director Purita Licas said the forum dubbed as “Sulit Conference” aimed to promote the benefits of SSS members and intensify awareness on SSS services.
Licas revealed that Region 02 was among four other regions in the Philippines which had a “low level of awareness” on SSS benefits and services, following a PIA-led survey in 2016.
SSS Tuguegarao Branch Head Janet Canillas gave an in-depth view of SSS short-term benefits such as maternity and sickness benefits, and long-term benefits such as retirement, disability, death, and funeral benefits.
Canillas also answered questions from attendees. She also clarified that private employees can already apply for SSS membership on the first day of their work.
Persons aged 15 years old can already become members, provided that they also have an income. Meanwhile, workers can apply for membership before they reach 60 years old.
Further, Canillas encouraged the public especially the workers in attendance to become a member of SSS to avail the various benefits offered by the system.
She also emphasized the SSS’ motto: “Once a member, always a member.”
The sulit conference also featured trivia games and prizes for the attendees, hosted by PIA staff and information officers.
The forum was attended by employees and administrators of various businesses and government agencies, and students from universities here.
On February 27, SSS and PIA with other local members of the media launched an advocacy program to strengthen promotion of other SSS programs, aside from retirement benefits, for current and future members.
The agencies also held the first stop of the regionwide sulit conferences in Batanes where Canillas and PIA’s Gene Baquiran guested in Radyo Pilipinas Batanes.
The radio program, Licas said, lasted more than two hours because of the engagement and questions of Batanes listeners.
PIA and SSS will continue to conduct multi-sectoral fora throughout the region as part of their intense information dissemination campaign. Northernforum.net
