NPA claims responsibility in killing of Cagayan town councilor

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The communist guerrilla has admitted they are responsible in the killing of Allacapan town Councilor Zaldy Mallari on Thursday, May 24.

In a message to Bombo Radyo, the New People’s Army (NPA) Danilo Ben Command said they ordered the slay of Mallari for his alleged land grabbing and for nursing police and military agents.

Mallari was a retired policeman and had served as a police chief of Allacapan before he entered into politics.

NPA also said Mallari allegedly colluded with traders to put farmers who have unpaid debts behind prison bars. They also accused him of protecting criminals.

Meanwhile, the Cagayan Valley regional police in a statement condemned the killing of Mallari, branding it an “odious act” perpetrated by the NPA rebels.

Chief Superintendent Jose Mario Espino said he already directed provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Warren Tolito to conduct manhunt operation for possible arrest of the suspects.

“This is also a manifestation of their crooked principle and ideologies which are contrary of what they are trying to portray to the public as champion of social justice. I urge the public to deny the rebel group activities and report them immediately to the authorities to prevent them from disturbing the peace and order in the community,” Espino said of the NPA killing.

Mallari was killed by two unidentified suspects on Thursday. He died of gunshot wounds in his head and torso.

Investigators recovered 9 bullet cartridges of .45 caliber and 7 slugs in the crime scene.
