LOOK: 7 college scholars secure scholarship from SM Foundation

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Seven incoming college students from different towns in Cagayan have received scholarship grants from SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI), SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown (SMCTD) announced on Thursday, May 24.

The recipients are Kenneth Bangayan, Jerryck Dulin, Junel Manayang, Jake Angelo Biraqui, Kushmi Himasha Perera, Marimar Bangibang, and Richard Jay Cama. The students have recently graduated from senior high school and are the first batch of graduates under the K to 12 curriculum.

SMFI will account for the full payment of tuition and school fees of the scholars. Each intellectuals will also receive monthly allowance for school projects assistance.

SMCTD Assistant Mall Manager  Kristine Iris Ceballos commends the said scholars as she welcomes them to the SM Family. “You were all blessed and lucky to become part of SM family because not all students in our province receive such opportunity,” Ceballos said.

Ceballos also told scholars of their possible employment with the SM group of companies after they graduate.

From 100 scholars in 1993 , the SM Scholarship Program has now risen to 3,000 scholars.

Presently, 1,000 SM scholars are enrolled in the foundation’s 110 partner colleges and universities nationwide. There are 500 new scholars for SY 2018-2019. From this number, 300 scholars come from the provinces while 200 scholars come from the National Capital Region (NCR).

Most of the scholars are children of vendors, tricycle drivers, jeepney drivers, farmers, fishermen, laborers, and the unemployed. Most of the scholars have graduated with high honors.

“At present, in its 25th year, the foundation did not fail to help poor yet deserving students. With open-handed assistance, the SMFI opens its doors for a better future through higher education,” SM said. With reports from Gerina Rose Malubay/SMCTD/GTL/TNF
