TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- After celebrating their 49th anniversary on Monday, February 19, Commission on Population (PopCom) Region 02 started their year-long countdown for their golden anniversary.
PopCom Region 02 launched the countdown with the theme: “PopCom@49: Countdown to Gold.”
“It’s a year-long preparation kasi gusto naming merong big bang sa aming 50th. Parang yung mag-asawa, diba? ‘Pag 50th Golden, talagang it’s an event that’s being looked forward to,” PopCom 02 Regional Director Herita Macarubbo said on Tuesday, March 6.
Macarubbo and other PopCom officials attended Tipon-Tipan sa PIA [Philippine Information Agency ] on Tuesday to promote their countdown.
Macarubbo said the agency has lots of upcoming activities and various programs concerning population until their 50th anniversary on February 2019.
PopCom is enjoining employees, retirees, and other regional stakeholders and partners to upload a photo of their most memorable moment in PopCom via hashtag POPCOMat49.
Further, Macarubbo said they will strengthen their mandates on providing guidance and assistance on responsible parenthood and modern family planning.
“Napakjarelevant po nitong programa na ito because of the RPRH law and because of the issuance of President Duterte na Executive Order no. 12 na yung attaining and sustaining zero unmet needs for modern family planning,” Macarubbo said.
She again encouraged parents to use modern family planning methods, adding that this is mainly the reason why Region 02 had a decrease in number of teenage fertility cases.
Meanwhile, the regional director said they are currently doing ppulation development (PopDev) mentoring in local government units (LGUs).
In PopDev mentoring, PopCom teaches local planning teams to make use of demographic and socioeconomic indicators in analyzing and planning issues on population. This also helps LGUs create programs addressing population.
Macarubbo said the first recipient of the PopDev project is Villaverde, Nueva Vizcaya.
The next LGU in PopCom’s help list is LGU Quezon, Isabela where a workshop on situational analysis is scheduled on March 15-16.
PopCom said they are also willing to give advice and input to LGUs in crafting local laws on population and preventing teenage pregnancy.
Earlier, PopCom provided input to LGU Solano, Nueva Vizcaya in making an ordinance.
“Sana ang mga local government units would consider explicitly the population dimension in their development planning. For example, in the LGU, given the limited resources, alin yung barangays na marami yung malnourished, dun sila magfocus… So we look where the problem is and that’s where interventions should be undertaken,” Macarubbo explained.
Further, she said LGUs should be the ones regulating rules separating rooms of males and females in dormitories and boarding houses.
“We would also appreciate na bigyan nila kami ng kopya [ng draft ordinance] and then we can input. Parang sa mga ordinances particularly on ordinance on boarding house- could hurt the incidents of teenage pregnancy,” Macarubbo said.
Meanwhile, PopCom’s theme for their 49th anniversary is “PopCom@49: Tungo sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Planadong Pamilyang Pilipino.
The celebration’s theme is anchored on the government’s thrust of the Philippine Population Management Plan (PPMP) Directorial Plan 2017-2022. Northernforum.net
