TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Tuguegarao City Vice Mayor Bienvenido “Benben” De Guzman II reminded elected officials and other public servants to think of the interest of their constituents instead of their own personal interests.
In his speech during this city’s celebration of the country’s 120th Independence Day, De Guzman reiterated that valuing people’s interest helps in the development of the country, the same country heroes of the past offered their lives for.
“Mas pangunahan po natin ang kahalagahan o ang interest po ng nakararami kaysa po sa ating personal na interest po. It is a challenge for each and everyone of us na nasa gobyerno… Once we do that, for sure uunlad ang ating bansa,” De Guzman said.
De Guzman also said everyone can become heroes but in “own special ways” such as following the rules of society [and] “seeing in each other the image and goodness of God.”
“The more that we are heroes if we always consider what is best for our country and each other including the generations to come,” De Guzman added.
In the ceremony, De Guzman also acknowledged the sacrifices of heroes who fought for the country’s independence.
“We are all beneficiaries of what our ancestors have done to our country hence it is our duty to take care of this legacy to the next generation,” De Guzman said.
He added that Filipinos must instill in the minds of the youth the value of treasuring and fighting for their freedom.
“It is therefore again proper that we acknowledge their contribution and their legacy to future generations,” De Guzman said
Meanwhile, former vice mayor and current City Administrator Romeo Calubaquib told Filipinos to be vigilant and be aware of anything that can trample their freedom.
The lawyer encouraged everyone to safeguard “at all times” the freedom Filipinos enjoy today.
“We celebrate not only of freedom gained but more importantly to remember the struggles and sacrifices of our ancestors who gave up their lives that we may today live in a free and democratic society,” Calubaquib said.
“Let us be responsible citizens of our community, upholding law and order, maintaining a clean and healthy environment, and an honest respect for the rights and statutes of others,” he added.
The City Government of Tuguegarao and Philippine Information Agency Region 02 (PIA 02) led the ceremony to commemorate the Philippines’ independence on Tuesday, June 12.
Employees of various regional agencies, police, and the media also attended the ceremony. Each agency also offered wreaths in the Heroes’ Monument of this city. Northernforum.net
