All Cagayan coastal towns to get BFAR’s CFLC

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) aims to put up Community Fish Landing Centers (CFLC) in all coastal towns of the province.

BFAR Cagayan Provincial Fishery Action Officer Venchito Villarao told Forum earlier this March that this is “practically” the goal of the agency.

Villarao said Gonzaga town is the next recipient of CFLC while its neighboring towns of Santa Teresita and Santa Ana are on the process of completing documents and requirements for construction of CFLC.

CFLCs are also now being constructed in Lal-lo, Gattaran, and Rizal, Villarao added.

BFAR has already built and inaugurated CFLCs in Cagayan’s northwestern coastal towns which include Sanchez Mira, Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Ballesteros, and Pamplona.

Launched in 2015, CFLC is under BFAR’s umbrella program called Targeted Action to Reduce Poverty and Generate Economic Transformation in the Fisheries Sector (TARGET).

CFLC has facilities such as stainless steel fish stalls and chest freezers which improve the local fishery sector and “maintain the freshness of caught fish.”

BFAR 02 Regional Director Milagros Morales said the facilities and equipment of the CFLC  is a big help for farmers, particularly on reducing post-harvest losses which are detrimental to fishermen’s income.

BFAR also said in a press release release that the CFLC is eyed as a center for trade and fish training, and as a center or bagsakan of caught fish.

The bureau added the center will be managed first by the local government and will turn over the project to fisherfolks once they have established “stronger community bonds.”

The CFLC will also serve as fish repository, training facility, and a center of fish trade in the area, BFAR said.

BFAR also said that the center is designed “following good manufacturing and hygienic practices.

“Upon full completion, access to safe and quality fish and fishery products is expected to improve,” the bureau added.

Meanwhile, Morales earlier said they will put up a total of 24 CFLCs in Region 02, adding that they aim to finish all CFLC projects this year.

The regional director also said only seven CFLC remain to be completed for the whole region. Northernforum.net
