Imee asks Cagayan barangay officials: ‘Support a Marcos in 2019 national polls’

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- As early as a year ahead the 2019 midterm elections, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos has asked barangay officials of Cagayan province to support a Marcos in case one of them runs for a national office.

In her speech before the more than 700 officials during an assembly in Clark, Pampanga, Marcos said a family member may be forced to run for national office due to the ‘slow-moving’ petition of her brother Bongbong Marcos before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).

“Dahil sa protesta ni Bongbong, na napakatagal, baka mapilitan ‘yung isa sa amin na tumakbo para sa national office,” Marcos said.

(Because of the slow-moving protest of Bongbong, one of us may be forced to run for national office.)

Bongbong has contested the result of the vice presidential election in 2016, claiming there was fraud in favor of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Banking on the power of “Solid North,” Marcos relayed a supposed statement of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile that Ilocanos must come together again to elect a senator from North.

The “Solid North” has been one of the known strongholds of the Marcoses. It is composed of the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, and Cagayan Valley.

“Sabi nga ni Manong Johny (Enrile), wala ng representative ang Amianan. Eto nga, in case, magpapatulong na lang ako sa inyo, at charity begins at home. Malapit naman kayo sa amin,” she said.

(As Mang Johny had said, we no longe have a representative from the North. Here, in case, I am asking for your supports, since charity begins at home. You’re after all near us.)

“So to all of you, magtulungan tayo, whether sa politika, whether sa presyo ng [bigas], whether sa kung anu-ano pang problema ng eleksyon, ng trapik, ng mga Tuguegarao to Solana bridge, lahat ng mga imprastruktura na hindi matuluy-tuloy dahil [walang] Ilokano [sa] Senado,” she added.

(So to all of you, let us help each other, whether in politics, whether in the price of rice, whether in any problem like election, traffic, the Tuguegarao to Solana bridge, and all the stalled infrastructure projects just because there’s no Ilokano at the Senate.)

In the same speech, Marcos also hinted their family’s frustrations to Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, the magistrate in charge of the electoral protest. Northernforum.net
