Mayor Garcia: 2019 Namunit Festival has always been for the promotion and development of the town

STA. TERESITA, Cagayan—Festivals has always been for the promotion and development of the town”, Mayor Lolita Garcia said during the press conference for the preparation of a week-long celebration of the 7th National Eco Tourism and 4th Namunit Festival.

“The 7th National Eco Tourism and 4th Namunit Festival will highlight the beauty of the town of Sta. Teresita Cagayan”, Garcia emphasizes.

In the upcoming celebration, Garcia said that the main event of the festival will be the search for Diwata and Prinsipe ng Kalikasan 2019, a pageant that is conducted during the festival.

Moreover, “this time, the festival will be more grandeur because of other modifications”, Garcia assured.

Meanwhile, the Pride of the town, the Bakong or the plant which is use for different industrial products will be staged. The Bakong Document, authored by an awardee of agricultural journalism and feature writer of The Northern Forum, Benjamin de Yro.

The book contains all the events and stories for the last seven years of the discovery of the Bakong plant.

Indicated in the book are also the tourist spot in the town of Sta. Teresita, the 54 caves which are accessible to for tourist exploration.

Sta. Teresita, Protected Area

To promote the growing Bakong enterprise in Sta. Teresita, Cagayan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), DENR Region 2 and the Local Government Unit.

The MOU is a venture of the DENR and the local government in promoting the establishment of biodiversity-friendly enterprise. It shall also provide livelihood and sources of income for communities within and surrounding areas of high biodiversity values.

Sta. Teresita’s Bangalao lake, a part of the Northeastern Cagayan Key Biodiversity Area, is a home of the endemic aquatic plant called Bakong which can be used to produce woven accessories and furniture. Turned into a ‘bustling industry’, this enterprise now helps as a source of income for the residents of the municipality.

The engagement of the DENR on Bakong enterprise started in 2013 through the Biodiversity Partnerships Project which initiated the conduct of a preliminary study of the water plant in determining its growth, supply and local distribution. The agency also facilitated the capacity building of People’s Organization.
