Cagayan to hold culture, arts, tourism summit this April

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- To help enrich and promote Cagayan, the Provincial Government will hold a Culture, Arts, and Tourism Summit in this city on April 11, 12, and 13.

Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Curator Jenifer Junio-Baquiran said the summit aims to thread together the culture and tourism of the province.

Baquiran said they will be inviting speakers and stakeholders in an attempt to form a local non-government organization on culture and arts. The group also aims to craft a culture and arts plan for Cagayan.

The summit is expected to be participated by the academe which consists of teachers from the Divisions of Cagayan and Tuguegarao City, and instructors from higher education institutions; and local government unit (LGU) officials such as tourism officers, focal persons on culture and arts, and municipal planning and development coordinators.

Also expected to join are mayors, vice mayors, and local legislators.

“Sana ay makapunta din sila. Napakahalaga na malaman nila ang halaga rin ng kultura, arte, at turismo sa ating bayan,” Baquiran said.

Cultural mapping

Prior to the summit, the local officers conducted cultural mapping in their respective towns and city.

The cultural mapping includes identifying and detailing the location, coordinates, physical description, and significance of historical and cultural properties in Cagayan.

The maps also include the provenances, backgrounds, and photos of the properties.

Baquiran said the LGUs of Claveria, Sanchez Mira, Penablanca, Tuguegarao, Santa Ana, Aparri, and Pamplona have submitted their maps.

Baquiran earlier said the mapping was done to comprehensively detail Cagayano culture and identity.

“Napakaganda ang kinalabasan ng ating cultural mapping kasi ang ating LGUs patuloy nang nalalaman kung ano yung treasure o yaman nila sa kanilang mga munisipyo at saka sa siyudad. Nakikita nila na napakaimportante na protektahan at i-develop din kung anuman ang heritage na nandun sa kanila at puwede nila itong gamitin bilang pang-akit sa turismo,” she said.

The cultural maps will be submitted to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and will be registered in the list of official emblems of the Philippines.

Baquiran noted that there are only 18 national symbols from Cagayan. Yet, the findings of cultural mappers is expected to boost this number to more than 100 Cagayan symbols. Northernforum.net
