TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Some 100 youth ministers under the St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral gathered on Saturday, February 17, at the Pastoral Center of the parish for the conduct of the Tizae Prayer Service, a monthly prayer gathering organized by the Parish Youth Ministry (PYM) core group.
Parish youth coordinator Reverend Father Chate Maggay Javier, in his lecture on sadness and depression, said that everyone, in one way or another, has experienced depression.
“Kapag nadedeppress ka, sabihin mo lang sa sarili mo na hindi ka nag-iisa,” said Fr. Javier.
He said depression is not a sign of weakness and has emphasized that it is a serious condition that needs medical attention.
“The youth today are the most vulnerable sector to depression,” Fr. Javier said citing that there were at least 2 cases of suicide reported this year in the province.
It should be noted that last January, a 19-year old student of Cagayan State University (CSU) died in an apparent suicide due to depression.
He said in order to cope up with depression, an individual should admit that he or she is depressed and has informed everyone to always remind themselves that negative thinking is a symptom of depression.
“Kapag nadedepress ka, magpray ka lang kay Lord at lahat ng mga iniinda mong bigat at problema sa buhay ay mawawala,” he said.
He added that as members of the youth ministry, the youth-participants alongside with the other youth in their communities should devote their time in focusing on their studies and helping the Basic Ecclesiastical Community (BEC) in their barangays, instead of doing things that would trigger depression.
On the other hand, Javier hopes that the youth especially the members of the Parish Youth Ministry will be more active in all the activities of the Parish intended for them and for all the parishioners. Mark Djeron C. Tumabao/PIA/TNF
