TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Cagayan’s Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) on Wednesday, May 16, has approved on third and final reading an ordinance extending financial assistance to the families of fallen Cagayano uniformed officers.
Known as “Hero Ka Cagayano Ordinance” the provincial government will give P20,000 to P50,000 to bereaved families of Cagayano uniformed officers who were killed in action and in the exercise of their duties.
The ordinance covers fallen soldiers from the army, navy, and air force; police officers, jail officers, and fire fighters.
A screening committee is formed by the ordinance and is tasked to identify families eligible for the financial aid.
A fund of P500,000 will be appropriated annually for the program.
The ordinance was principally sponsored by Third District Board Member Karen Kaye Turingan and co-sponsored by Vice Governor Melvin Boy Vargas, Board Members Perla Tumaliuan, Rodrigo De Asis, Ross Resuello, Jeff Vargas, Archie Layus, Cris Barcena, Larry Ting, and Maila Ting-Que.
The provincial board said granting assistance to “courageous fallen armed men will square their genuine efforts in risking life in protecting the province or country.”
“The ordinance intends to uplift the morale of Cagayano armed men who illustrate bravery, heroism in risking their lives to fight and protect our province and country as well,” Section 02 of the ordinance stated.
Following legislative process, Governor Manuel Mamba has 15 days to either sign or veto the proposed ordinance. The board can override given majority votes in case of veto.
Meanwhile, the board also approved eight other ordinances on third and final reading on Wednesday, including an ordinance institutionalizing the grant of burial assistance to the nearest surviving relative who took care of the deceased indigent senior citizen. Gerard Lucena/Northernforum.net
