NPA admits burning of logs; accuses AFP over bribery

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – The Benito Tesorio Command New People’s Army (NPA-BTC) has claimed responsibility over the burning of thousands of trees in board feet, which they say are illegally cut down from Sierra Madre.

In a statement sent to a radio station in Cauayan, NPA-BTC admitted that they were behind the incineration as a punishment to the ‘illegal loggers’, and as a warning to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“Napag-alaman naming na kumukuha ng pera ang mga kasundaluhan ng AFP bilang SOP o palusot sa mga nagkakahoy”, said NPA-BTC in their statement.

(“We have learned that the AFP collects money as SOP or bribe from the loggers”)

The rebel group claimed that they conducted and organized a checkpoint which resulted to the confiscation of at least 11,000 board feet from three trucks last August 29 and 31 at Barangay Guilingan, Benito Soliven and Barangay Dicamay, San Mariano.

NPA-BTC said that the logs were from the different parts of Sierra Madre, and is illegal because of the forestry code.

“Pinatunayan lamang nila na hindi totoong nagsisilbi ang CSP para sa kagalingan ng mamamayan”, the group added.

(“They just proved that the CSP (Community Service Program) isn’t for the sake and welfare of the people”)

In an article published online by the same radio station, Lt. Col. Gladius Calilan, Commanding Officer of the 95th Infantry Battalion said that this incident is the second time the rebel group burned logs.

The colonel also said that there might be something the rebels want from the people where the burning took place that’s why they stole the logs.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Pablo Lorenzo, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division said that they are open for investigation regarding the said matter.
