TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN – Senior Health Program Officer of the Department of Health Region 2 (DOH R02) Haidee Sunico said, “We need a year-round commitment for blood donation”.
In a press conference held by DOH R02 on July 5, Sunico stressed that the blood bank isn’t always enough to cater everyone.
However, through the commitment of Local Government Units (LGUs) to conduct bloodletting activities and raising awareness to everyone, DOH R02 can attain it’s goal.
The senior officer stated that they are consistently coordinating with the LGUs to promote the Republic Act No. 7719, also known as the National Blood Services Act of 1994, which encourages voluntary blood donation for the sufficient supply of safe blood and to regulate blood banks.
“There will be enough fund to conduct activities because of the different agencies who share the same goal in ensuring that there is adequate supply of blood in the bank”, Sunico added.
Furthermore, because of the expiration of some blood bags, they are rendered useless and can’t be used anymore leaving some patients to scour other hospitals to look for blood.
On the other hand, 130 bags were collected during a bloodletting activity at the Cagayan Sports Coliseum in celebration of the World Blood Donor’s day spearheaded by the Provincial Health Office.
Sunico also expressed her sentiment against those who are selling their blood for money and wants to remind the people for the next two-day bloodletting activity to be held in Ilagan City on July 11-12. @northernforum.net
