Vote buying, liquor and gun ban offense, harassment hound Cagayan barangay, SK polls

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Rampant vote buying, harassment, and liquor and gun ban violations were reported in Cagayan province amid the 2018 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on Monday, May 14.

At least three incidents of  vote buying were reported by police units around the province.

In Barangay Dodan in Aparri town, police are preparing the file charges for vote buying against candidate Nemesio Furagganan, who is running for chairman in the said barangay.  Investigations showed the suspect have distributed P300 for every voter.

In Gonzaga town, barangay Sta. Cruz captain candidate Arturo Alvarez allegedly distributed P500 to two voters who earlier acceded to his invite to come inside his house. Police said Alvarez offered for more if ever he wins as chairman.

Visitacion Cabisora, 67, was also reported for funding an alleged vote buying in favor of candidate for kagawad Allen Lorenzo.

Meanwhile, threats and harassment were also recorded by police at the height of election period.

A night before the election, police responded to an alleged commotion between the husband of re-elect chairman candidate Gil Pagulayan and incumbent Kagawad Bubut Tamayao.

Tamayao reportedly confronted Pagulayan, accusing him of buying votes, prompting a heated argument between the groups.

In Gonzaga town, police apprehended Rowald Macapagal, 39, for “illegal” discharge of firearms around 10 pm on election day.

Barangay Paradise Kagawad Warren Vallangca reportedly called for the police to respond.

“Upon sensing the arrival of the PNP personnel, the suspect immediately boarded his Nissan Navarra vehicle and immediately fled that prompted the responding policemen to chased him and eventually cornered the suspect near the Saint Rock Parish Church,” police said.

Police recovered magazines and live ammunition from the suspects vehicle.

On Tuesday early morning, personnel of PNP Solana also survived an apparent ambush in Barangay General Balao. The group were travelling back to their police station after a post-election patrol in western barangays when unidentified gunmen opened fire at them.

Police also arrested several persons in the towns of Sanchez Mira, Solana, Baggao, and Camalaniugan for violating liquor ban. Northernforum.net
