Cagayan SP Oks creation of prov’l sports commission

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Cagayan has approved on third and final reading the creation of Cagayan Provincial Sports Commission, in the 66th Regular Session on Wednesday, December 6.

The commission will be tasked to formulate and implement a Sports Development Program and strategies. They will also evaluate and supervise sports activities of the province.

The proposed ordinance creating the said commission was sponsored by Cagayan Second District Board Member Jesus Florencio “Jeff” Vargas.

If approved, the commission will be composed of the Governor as chairman, a Provincial Sports Director as co-chairman, the Vice Governor as vice chairman, a representative from the Philippine Sports Commission, chairs of the SP’s committee on Education and Committee on Youth and Sports Development; and representatives from duly recognized and accredited sports organizations in the province.

“The youth is one of our priorities. Isa ito sa mga tulong na puwede nating gawin para makapagbigay tayo ng suporta na galing sa probinsya ng Cagayan para sa ating mga athletes, para sa ating mga kabataan,” Jeff Vargas said.

Further, a provincial sports council will also be formed to review and recommend sports development programs.

Aside from this, the commission will also extend technical assistance to athletes and trainers.

“We’re also for empowerment, of course. Kaya nga natin sila tinutulungan para hindi lang sila mag-excel ng effort locally but nationally, and even if they can go international, makakakuha sila dito sa ating ordinansa,” Vargas said.

The proposed ordinance was approved subject to the suggestions corrections and recommendations of the boar’s Committee on Reorganization, Civil Service, and Human Resource Development; and Committee on Youth and Sports Development.

Meanwhile, Vice Governor Melvin Vargas Jr said the SP hopes this ordinance will serve best its intents and purposes.

The proposed ordinance has an initial fund of P2 million but Vargas said it is up to Governor Manuel Mamba to add funding. “Kung gusto pa niyang palawigin itong ordinansa, puwede naman natin itong palakasin at pagandahin pa sa pamamagitan ng pagbago o pag-amenda sa ating ordinansa,” he said.

Following the local government code, Governor Manuel Mamba has 15 days to either sign or veto the proposed ordinance. Northernforum.net
