6 soldiers hurt in Quirino landmine blast

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines- Six soldiers were hurt in a landmine blast in Nagtipunan town in Quirino province on Tuesday, July 11.

Captain Jefferson Somera of the 5th Infantry Division said the soldiers were aboard two military vehicles when they were struck by explosion in Barangay Sangbay around 8:30 am on Tuesday.

Somera said the military personnel were members of the 86th Infantry Battalion, the group who was responsible in seizing a rebel camp in Barangay Disimungal, also Nagtipunan town.

With this, the Army blamed the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels for the attack, saying this was their way of retaliation against the group.

Somera said the troops were on their way to their tactical command post when the explosion happened. Their names were withheld in the statement.

Wounded troops were brought to two separate hospitals for medical treatment.

Major General Paul Atal, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, said the attack was violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, the international rules of warfare, including the protocols on the use of mines and explosives.
